Information for Parents

Introduction

L.E.A.P. and McMaster University cannot assume responsibility for your son or daughter before class starts or after class finishes (with the exception of those students staying in McMaster residence). During lunch, students will be accompanied by trained undergraduates who will also organize activities

About L.E.A.P.

  1. Where are L.E.A.P.'s classes and labs located?

Classes and labs are located on McMaster University campus in the research & teaching facilities of the Faculty of Engineering; JHE (John Hodgins Engineering) and BSB (Burke Science Building).

  2. Will my son or daughter need extra money for course material?

No. All course materials are included in the registration fee. However, students may want to bring extra money for lunch or snacks.

  3. How many staff members are there in the class?

Each classroom is led by two McMaster Engineering undergraduate students, one male and one female.

  4. What happens if my son or daughter has to miss a class, or a day of the program?

If your son or daughter is going to be absent, we ask that you inform the L.E.A.P. office via e-mail vespi@mcmaster.ca, or phone (905) 525-9140, ext. 24906. If a student must leave class early, we ask that a note from the parent or guardian be provided. Students are not permitted to leave class without permission.

  5. What if my child misbehaves? Will you send them home?

All students sign a code of conduct. If any major offence, or anything deemed by law to be illegal occurs, the students will be expelled from the program and the return home will be the sole responsibility of the student and/or parent/guardian. Minor offences will be handled by the manager, the counsellors, and the student.

Residence Students

  1. Will my son/daughter be able to visit family/friends in Hamilton?

Residence students will be allowed to visit family/friends and have visitors under the following conditions only:

    - Parental permission is sent to the L.E.A.P. office in writing via mail, fax or e-mail
    - The family member/friend picks up and drops off the student at Mary E. Keyes

  2. Will my child be on the same floor as students of the opposite sex?

Yes. Mary E. Keyes is a Co-Ed residence. We have an open door policy to ensure that when students other than the residents of a room are inside, the door must be open at all times. Suite-mates are same-sex.

  3. My child has a food allergy. What precautions will be taken?

All students are required to fill out a personal information form detailing any special needs or dietary concerns before they arrive in residence. However, parents of students with severe allergies should be aware that Mary E. Keyes cannot guarantee that your child will not be in contact with that food item. Therefore, it is a personal decision whether to participate in the residence option.

  4. How do I contact my child while living in residence?

You may call our office at 905-525-9140 x24906 during office hours (8:30am-4:30pm) and we will bring the student to the office to talk to you. The residence rooms do not have phones.

  5. Can my child do laundry while staying in residence?

Students staying in residence have the option to do laundry at the on site laundry facilities. Please note that students should bring their own laundry soap.

Commuting Students

  1. Will my son/daughter be able to leave campus during lunch?

No. All students will be eating lunch as a group with their instructors.

  2. What are the pick-up and drop-off procedures?

Students should arrive daily between 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. at the annex of the John Hodgins Engineering Building (JHE). Registration will be in the lobby of the JHE annex when you arrive for your first day of L.E.A.P. On all days thereafter, students should head to their homeroom for attendance. Dismissal is at 4:00 p.m. daily. Parents will receive a 15-minute parking voucher which will allow them to drive onto campus for drop-off and pick-up. If you intend to stay longer than 15 minutes, you will be required to pay $7 per hour for up to a maximum of 4 hours (a daily pass is $20). Please park in Parking Lot I for all pick-up and drop-off. There is now also a busing option.
